Edge Hill University in Liverpool was founded in 1885 and has a reputation as an innovative, successful and distinctive higher education provider and has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education ‘University of the Year’ three times.
The university’s 3-storey library in the purpose built campus in Ormskirk is a learning hub for students consisting of book collections, discussion areas, personal learning pods and computer terminals. we worked with Briar Associates, one of the UK’s leading independent energy and environmental consultants, to completely refurbish the library’s lighting system, which was inefficient and outdated. Lylux was selected for the quality of its products, its lighting design experience, technical expertise and our ability to provide a turnkey service.
The library was lit with over 1000 conventional 4x2ft T8 recessed fittings. These were old and out of date and although they gave a reasonably good spread of light in most areas they were expensive to run and maintain. The challenge was to deliver a versatile lighting system that delivered improved working conditions in a variety of different locations in the library whilst cutting energy usage and maintenance costs.
LYLUX surveyed the building and recommended that the existing fittings and T8 tubes be replaced with Lylux LED panels. Further energy savings were achieved by incorporating PIR sensors to panels within low traffic areas, which meant that the lights only came on when there were people present. In addition, the emergency lighting was replaced with 1W LED stand alone units. In total, 750 Lylux LED panels with over 200 PIRs were used to replace over 1000 recessed fittings.
The new system provided improved working conditions, because unlike conventional recessed fittings, Lylux LED panels give a uniform light spread.
Energy savings for this project have been estimate at 40%.
